TRANSFORMATION OF COMMUNITIES IN CHRIST THROUGH THE CHURCH BY BISHOP NG MOON HING

As I survey the past records, I have inevitably come across many times the 5-prong strategy of the early missionaries had for this land, namely, education, medical, social, pastoral and spiritual, which are compatible with the teaching of the Scriptures. We today in the 21st Century need to continue in this 5-prong strategy of church growth and planting. It is truly a Transformation for the Communities.

Education

The original aim is to improve lives, and education is one of the ways forward and also one of the most basic and long term tools for self-independence and interdependence. The Scripture says “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” (John 8:32) Ignorance can actually become a bondage to oneself or one community or even one people group. The church started schools.

Medical

Ever since the Fall of humankind, sicknesses and diseases have been constantly haunting human beings. Medical services are set up not to take the place of God who is the Healer, rather a complimentary element to God’s creation. Many thought medical services are set up to cure and heal people. The bottom line is not so much ‘Curing’ but ‘Prevention’. It is the stubborn mindset of humans that has brought about much self inflicted suffering. Yet I do not deny the fact that suffering or illnesses can also due to the evil one. Health care and health awareness are priorities to all communities. The church started the health clinics and hospitals.

Social

Due to the evil intent in human lives, many suffer various kinds of social stigma and societal rejection. Our God is good and we must imitate Him. We need to help those who are in need. The ‘haves’ help the ‘have-nots’, the ‘able’ help the ‘disabled’, the skillful and talented help those who are less talented and skillful. This is in line with the commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” The church started social centres.

Pastoral

“All of us are like sheep which have gone astray; each in its own way.” (Isa 53:6) We need the shepherd to guide and lead us always to the right path. Teaching, leading, correcting, training, guiding and equipping are the task of the Pastors and leaders of the church. The church is a living organism that will and must grow and multiple herself. The church started worship services, ministries and seminaries.

Spiritual

This is a spiritual world where both the good and the bad exit together. Jesus is the Light in this world of darkness. We have come from darkness into the marvelous light by faith in Jesus Christ. We still have to contend with the forces of evil with the help of the Holy Spirit. “Not by might, nor by power but by the Spirit; says the Lord.” (Zech 4:6) The church started prayer and fasting sessions, and teaching her members how to counter spiritual warfare.

The continuation of this 5-prong strategy in church growth and planting will definitely bring about much transformation of communities in Christ through the church. Where are we? How far are we keeping this 5-prong strategy?
